Iran's Foreign Minister, Ali Akbar Salhi, published an article in the "Washington Post" newspaper for the opening of the Conference in Istanbul, and claimed that his country is opposed to nuclear weapons - and proved it in the past.

"We emphasized our opposition to WMD in many cases. Almost seven years ago, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expressed a commitment on the issue. He issued a religious ruling - a Fatwa - which prohibited the manufacture, storage and use of nuclear weapons. Our position stood up in the past, when Saddam Hussein attacked us with chemical weapons in the 80s, & we did not answer by the same means."
