Allowing Husbands to have Sex with a Dead Wife

Until death do we part, plus six hours. That is the gist of a law being debated by Islamists in Egypt’s parliament. Known as the “Farewell Intercourse Law,” the proposal would allow a husband to have sex with his dead wife up to six hours after her death.
A scholar who suggested the law said the right to have sex with corpse of a spouse is acceptable as long as women have the same right. However, it is not clear if the Islamists are going to accept those conditions. Besides, a woman having sex with a dead man is a bit more problematic. Of course, after rigor mortis sets in…
Seriously, the thought of legalizing necrophilia in these circumstances churns the stomach. What person in his right mind would want to have sex with a deceased partner within minutes or hours of that person’s death? That should be the last thing on a sane person’s mind.
Women’s groups are rightfully appalled at the idea, along with a proposed law that allows girls to be married at age 14 and another that would impose obstructions on a woman’s right to divorce.
After a revolution to free Egypt, women’s rights are under assault. The few progressive laws of the last few decades face reversal. As with other countries in the Middle East, narrow-minded men seek to impose their will on women, treating them as little better than slaves. Sadly, even death may not provide liberation from that oppression.
